Apati Fraud

Apati is the word for fraud in Greece and klopi means theft. We’ll get to thievery and fraud later. Let’s examine the probate process in Greece, or the cutting of the dead.

There's a little clip from Zorba, the movie with Anthony Quinn, where Madame Hortense is dying. The book was written by Nikos Kazantzakis and the hero is Alexis Zorba. It is a beautiful book.

On the screen captures below, the captions from the film, say "the foreigner is dying" "she has no family" "the State will take everything" "why not us, we're the poor" and "that's awful. why, she is dead." “Why, she is dead,” is Zorba's answer, and the explanation.

There’s a part missing which is in the clip. Somewhere in the middle of this a young man yells at the townspeople, "Murderers. Graceless (atimoi)."

There’s no good direct English translation. Atimos can mean coward, ignominious, dishonest, infamous, inglorious, knavish in a lexicon. But atimos really means an absence of the spiritual quality of grace. It means without real value, or graceless (aharos) and also deceitful thief.

The movie was shot on the island of Crete.
